Horseshoe Crab And Sea Cucumber Have Ability To Cure

Now, a group of foreign scientists have discovered that this species of crab and the sea cucumber, together with the sponge and sea horse, bring good news to cancer patients.

The four have the ability to cure cancer. This follows a research conducted by the foreign scientists, with cooperation from their Malaysian counterparts on the wonders of these marine life to cure cancer.

Universiti Malaysia Terengganu's (UMT) Tropical Aquaculture Institute director, Profesor Dr Faizah Shaharom said research on the species had shown positive results, especially for cancer treatment.

"The research was actually done over the past five years and only received the attention of scientists recently," she told the media when met at the International Conference on Marine Organisms and Their Biomedical Potentials: Expectations and Realizations here Sunday.

She said scientists from Paris University in France, Goa University and Delhi University in India, as well as from UMT and Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) had found the cure for cancer, via the research.

Recent findings also showed that the sea sponge had the ability to cure the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), added Dr Faizah.

Due to a lack of technology and equipment for the research, UMT had welcomed foreign cooperation.

Several UMT students were sent to France to jointly conduct the test on the seahorse, which was believed to be able to cure cancer, she said.

She said UMT would continue to send its students and the Malaysian marine life extracts, especially from Terengganu waters, to be studied at a foreign varsity, with the help of their state-of-the-art technology and scientists.

Meanwhile, an international scientist who was met at the seminar, has expressed an interest to fund the follow-up research if UMT was interested.

The scientist owns a bio-technology company in the United States and India.
